Why look at Sri Lanka?
- Talent. Colombo has a well-established software industry, including home-grown product companies such as WSO2 and engineering centres of international firms. Universities like the University of Moratuwa, the University of Colombo School of Computing and SLIIT produce strong computing graduates every year.
- Communication. English is widely used in business and higher education, and many engineers already work with overseas clients.
- Cost. Salaries for experienced engineers are well below Western levels.
- Time zone. UTC+5:30 overlaps with mornings in the UK and Europe and afternoons in Australia and Singapore.
Hiring models
1. Remote contractors
The fastest way to start. Good for one or two roles, with clear contracts and IP terms.
2. Employer of Record (EOR)
An EOR employs the engineer locally on your behalf and handles payroll and compliance. Popular for small teams.
3. Your own entity
Best for larger, long-term teams or an offshore development centre.
4. A recruitment partner
Whichever model you choose, a recruitment partner finds and assesses candidates, benchmarks salaries and manages offers. See offshore teams.
Employment and tax rules change, so take local legal and tax advice before choosing a model.
Running a good process
- Write a clear brief with stack, seniority, working hours and budget.
- Benchmark the offer. Strong engineers often have remote offers paid in foreign currency.
- Move fast with two or three interview rounds.
- Plan onboarding: overlap hours, tools and a first-month plan.
